BLUFUME offers Australian companies who have traditionally used archaic fumigants as part of their pest management programs an environmentally sustainable alternative, enabling them to significantly reduce their emissions on their path to carbon neutrality.

18 April 2023 - Draslovka Holdings a.s. welcomes the approval by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) of the use of BLUEFUME™, marking an important step forward for the environmental impact of the pest control industry in Australia.

BLUEFUME™ is a highly effective, cost efficient, environmentally sustainable alternative structural fumigation product for use in places like factories, mills, silos, warehouses and ships. It directly replaces existing products such as sulfuryl fluoride which have a detrimental environmental impact. BLUEFUME™, which breaks down into naturally occurring substances, offers Australian companies who have traditionally used archaic fumigants as part of their pest management programs an environmentally sustainable alternative, enabling them to significantly reduce their emissions on their path to carbon neutrality.

In response to the Montreal Protocol, agreed nearly three decades ago, the pest control industry took steps to phase out its use of methyl bromide, a prolific ozone depleting substance. In its place, fumigators turned to using sulfuryl fluoride which, whilst effective, is a synthetic greenhouse gas with a global warming potential more than 4000 times that of carbon dioxide. Today, a further step change is needed to ensure the industry remains sustainable into the long term by deploying effective, environmentally sustainable alternatives to legacy products.

BLUEFUME™ has been approved for use in the European Union and is a preferred treatment option in France, Germany, South Africa, and New Zealand. As such, Australia has now joined a growing list of countries committed to upholding their multilateral environmental commitments under the Montreal Protocol and Paris Agreement.

Responding to the news, Kade McConville, Director of Draslovka Agricultural Solutions, said:

“The approval of BLUEFUME™ by the Government of Australia is a welcome step forward, providing the industry with the means to dramatically lower the emissions created by fumigation activities.  The use of BLUEFUME™ will change the environmental sustainability landscape of fumigation in Australia, historically one of the most prolific users globally of environmentally damaging legacy products.”

About BLUEFUME™

BLUEFUME™ (active ingredient: Hydrogen Cyanide - HCN) is a rapid acting, colourless, flammable fumigant used for the treatment of empty structures to control stored-product insects. The fumigant has great disinfestation and deratization effects due to its excellent distribution and penetration properties. Its effectiveness in one-time fumigation with a short exposure and its outstanding efficacy against a whole range of pests make BLUEFUME™ one of the most used fumigants on the market. HCN is not a new fumigant, it is one of the first fumigants to be used extensively under modern conditions. HCN has been used for more than 100 years.

Although BLUEFUME™ is currently used mainly for the treatment of mills, thanks to a wide range of laboratory and field tests of efficacy against various pests and also the development of new application technology, it is certainly possible to use its potential in other agricultural segments as well.

HCN is not an ozone-depleting chemical and a viable alternative to ozone-depleting methyl bromide and to break the phosphine resistant insects. BLUEFUME™ application is backed by our extensive consulting, installation, safety training and support services. Follow the product label recommendations to achieve maximum control of the target organisms.

About Montreal Protocol

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is a landmark multilateral environmental agreement, committing signatories to the phase out of the production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Australia ratified the Protocol in 1989.
